Grey Ironbarks ranges from light grey or light chocolate with some darker reds and browns sometimes occurring. Sapwood is slightly lighter in colour. Ironbark is a clean timber with very little gum veins or gum pockets.
Ironbarks are a very characteristic group of trees, so named on account of the thick, compact, hard bark. The name however could equally apply to the timber itself, for it is certainly the ironwood of the whole Eucalyptus genus. The wood is very heavy, hard and compact. Microscopically, the fibres are seen to be very thick walled, compact and closely compressed.
The heartwood is highly durable (Class 1) Janka Rating 16.3, allowing a wide range of applications. The sapwood is not susceptible to Lyctid attack. Applications include heavy engineering, marine structures, poles, boat building, framework, flooring and decking.

Sydney Blue Gum colour ranges from dark pink to reddish brown. The sapwood is typically distinctly paler in colour. Gum vein and gum pockets are common. The timber is usually straight grained with a small percentage showing some interlocking grain. The texture is moderately coarse.
The timber is easy to work, fix and dress and has been extensively used in a variety of both structural and appearance applications, including flooring, decking, joinery, furniture, domestic and commercial construction, cladding, panelling and boat building. The heartwood is moderately durable (Class 3) Janka Rating 9.0.

Stringybark is blend of golden yellows, pale creamy browns with a pinkish tinge. The sapwood is slightly paler. The texture is medium and even, with the grain often being interlocked. The timber resembles Blackbutt in colour and texture.
Stringybark is durable (Class 2) Janka Rating 8.8 . The timber's working characteristics are good and applications include framing, decking, flooring, sleepers, poles, piles and crossarms.

Mountain Ash is pale pink to pale straw in colour. The grain is generally straight with occasional waviness and gum vein is a common feature makes it a distinctive flooring material.
Mountain Ash is of only medium to low durability (Class 4) Janka Rating 5.0 limiting it to more internal or suitably protected applications. Their sapwood is generally resistant to lyctid borer attack. The species works well and offer great versatility in its uses. Applications include general framing, flooring, and paneling, joinery and furniture.
