Installation of Kiln Dried or Pre-finished T&G Floorboards(19mm Hardwood)
With a existing timber sub-floor we glue & nail the new floor boards on to the existing sub floor with heavy duty cleats, which is known as secret nailing. We leave 10mm gap from each wall as an expansion gap and then cover it up with Beading, Scotia or your selection of Skirting board.
With a concrete slab we install either Battens or plywood, both are nailed onto the concrete slab with 50mm anchors, and then we glue & nail the new floor boards on to the battens or plywood with heavy duty cleats, which is known as secret nailing. We leave 10mm gap from each wall as an expansion gap and then cover it up with Beading, Scotia or your selection of Skirting board.
Installation of Slimwood Floorboards(12mm Hardwood)
With Slimwood floorboards it could be installed to, Plywood, Concrete slab or any flat surface only. We install the Slimwood to the surface with specific water based adhesive. We leave 10mm gap from each wall as an expansion gap and then cover it up with Beading, Scotia or your selection of Skirting board.
Installation of Floating Floorboards(15mm Pre-finished Flooring)
With Floating floorboards it could be installed to, Plywood, Concrete slab or any existing flat surface only. This type of flooring is more suitable for units and townhouses.
The floating is layed with 2mm foam underlay which cuts noise by 35% and is only glued together between the tongue & Groove (T&G) with a construction grade water based adhesive.
We again leave 10mm gap between the walls to allow expansion,
These gaps are covered with 19mm Matching Beading, Scotia , Quad or your choice of Skirting.
After the Installation an acclimatization period of 10 days to 2 weeks is required for the timber to get used to its nailed form, after this period we come in and begin the sanding and polishing.
Sanding Your floor will be sanded several times, with different grades of paper. The first sanding will be with a very rough grade of paper, this will remove any existing finish, in order to expose bare wood. The sanding is then done using finer and finer grades of paper until the floor is very smooth. This will create a nice level surface for the application of the finish.
Using an edging sander, we will very carefully sand up along the walls. Hard to reach places will be sanded by hand until the entire floor is ready to be finished.
The Buffing
Before the first layer is applied, the floor must be buffed with a buffing machine in order to prepare the floor and remove any unseen scratches. It is impossible to see all the scratches when the finish is removed, and when the new finish will be applied the scratches will be highlighted. Buffing is also essential between coats. Between every application of the finish coats, the wood floor must be buffed in order to smooth the small pieces ("the crumbs") and achieve maximum smoothness.
The Finishing
We employ a 2 or 3 coat system depending on customer requirements, that involves finishing the floor with one coat on the same day as the sanding job, then coming back the next day to apply the final coat.
Water Based Finishes The water based finishes are clear, allowing more of the wood's natural colours to show. Water based finishes are available in gloss, satin or matte.
Natural or Solid Oil
Natural Oil or Solid Oil preserves your timber by penetrating and nourishing it, is hard wearing however, with that traditional tung oil look. Natural or Solid is available in satin or matte.
